Spring in a woodland at the Ashridge Estate, Chilterns, UK. The bluebells, a spring woodland flower shown in this panorama, are at their best in late April and early May. In the centre of the estate is a tall tower, the Bridgewater Monument, which can be climbed via a spiral staircase for extensive views of the surrounding countryside. Bluebells are fragile flowers since they have soft, succulent leaves that are particularly sensitive to being trodden on, and once damaged they are unable to absorb the sun and photosynthesise so they die back. Additionally, bulbs become damaged when the soil is compacted from the weight of footfall.
