Piton de la Fournaise is a shield volcano on Réunion island in the Indian Ocean. It is currently one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The eruption of Piton Payankë on the northern slope of the Piton de la Fournaise occurred on 22 August 2003 and lasted five days. It produced more than 6 cubic meters of lava.
