The scutum is a type of shield that was used primarily among Italic peoples, including the army of ancient Rome in around the 4th century BC. While not the only shield used by the Romans, the shape of the scutum shown here was fundamental in the creation of the hoplite phalanx formation now synonymous with the legions of Rome.
