This scene transports your students to the Globe Theatre in Bankside, south of the Thames in London, in the early seventeenth century. They can view the exterior of the building and explore inside: around the stage area, but also higher in the galleries by climbing the stairs.
# Learning objectives
1: Understand the roles of theatres and playhouses in Elizabethan England{.info}
2: Identify the similarities and differences between the experience of visiting the Globe in the early 17th century and visiting a modern theatre{.info}
# The Theatre {.objective .objective1}
vA brief history of the theatre is given, as well as a description of its layout and building materials. Students are asked to enter the scene and observe the structure of the theatre and its open roof.
# The Stage {.objective .objective2}
Information is given about the apron stage (including how players would enter and exit) and the plays performed on it. Students are asked to enter the scene and look closely at the stage and how plays might be brought to life on it, comparing it with a typical stage in a modern theatre.
Students are asked to walk toward the stage and listen to Sonnet 18, "Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Day?" being read out to get a sense of the language that Shakespeare used.
# The Experience {.objective .objective3}
Information about the rowdy behaviour typical in Elizabethan audiences is given, plus the fact that people of different classes would attend, viewing the play from very different conditions. Students are asked to enter the scene and climb up to the galleries, under the cover of the roof, and compare this experience to that of a 'groundling' watching a play. They are also asked to locate the (non-existent) toilets!
