Welcome To Mesoamerica, home of the Maya people. Mayan civilization began thousands of years ago in this huge area, which now forms Mexico and parts of Central America. The Mayas built many incredible cities, much like the one you will arrive in today. Different kings and queens ruled many cities; however, the Mayas shared several common beliefs and traditions.

# What was life like for the Ancient Mayan People?{.objective .objective1}

This section asks students to consider what average life was like for Mayan people. They will examine how important farming was, the jobs undertaken by men and women, and the schooling offered to boys and girls. The activity for section one asks students to explore the city and look for evidence of what jobs people did and how people lived.

# Mayan Pastimes?{.objective .objective2}

Section two looks at how the Mayas spent their free time, including the game ‘pitz’ or ‘pok-ta-pok.’ The activity for this section asks students to explore the village and look for evidence of where and how Mayan residents played Pitz.

# Mayan Beliefs{.objective .objective3}

Section three examines the gods worshipped by the Mayas in more detail, focusing on how they represented different parts of Mayan life. It briefly touches on sacrifices made to the gods and beliefs about what happens after we die. The activity for this section asks students to explore the town and look for evidence of Mayan religious beliefs, including clues about who might have been worshipped there.
