This scene lets students explore a barrage used to harness energy from tidal flow using turbines. Exploring the scene, students will develop and understanding of how a gated system allows tidal water flow to be controlled to generate a provide a steady output of electricity from the predictability and power of tidal movement. Using tidal energy as an alternative and renewable source of energy, students will explore the benefits and drawbacks of using barrages.
# Learning objectives
1: Understand how Tidal Movement a source of Renewable Energy {.info}
2: Know How Water Drives Turbines {.info}
3: Know the Drawbacks of Using Tidal Energy {.info}
# Energy in the Tides {.objective .objective1}
Students will learn about tidal water flow as an alternative source of renewable energy. They will develop an understanding of how tidal energy can generate electricity from a predictable movement of water, without producing greenhouse gases and pollution, and how it is more reliable and powerful than wind.
# Generating Electricity {.objective .objective2}
Here students will learn about the basic design of a barrage and the turbines. They will develop an understating that the tides can be controlled to create a gradient of water levels across the barrage to provide a steady movement of water through the turbines. Students will develop an understanding of how the turning motion of the blades drives the shaft in the generator to turn and spin a set of magnets that will induce an electrical current, generating electricity.
# The Drawback of Tidal Energy {.objective .objective3}
Students will learn about some of the disadvantages of using wind turbines. From the disruption of habitats and the increased risk to the lively who of local wildlife, to the expense involved in the infrastructure of building a barrage and the supervision of the barrage, they will understand how engineers are now moving towards individual turbines not housed within a barrage. So, to reduce the damage and cost that barrages create.
