Reactions of Carbonates

The scene lets students explore a site with two temples, one of which is a ruin. The idea behind the scenes is to show the changes that take place to limestone due to chemical weathering caused by acid rain, as students learn about carbonates and how they react with acid. Students will look for clues that a chemical reaction is happening and the effect it’s having on limestone.

# What are Carbonates?{.objective .objective1}

Students will learn about metal carbonates and their chemical formulas. Students will be asked to explore the scene and identify what limestone has been used for.

# Carbonates and Acids{.objective .objective2}

Students will learn about the chemical reaction between carbonates and acid. Students will be asked to explore and identify if a chemical reaction is happening by exploring the ruin.

# Building with Carbonates{.objective .objective3}

Students will learn about the impact of acid rain of limestone. Students will be asked to explore the two temples and find examples of chemical weathering.
