The scene lets students explore the desert island and the separation techniques used to separate water from a mixture of sand and salt. By observing the equipment and method, students will learn about filtration, evaporation, and crystallisation as methods of separating insoluble and soluble material from a liquid.
# Learning objectives
1: Know that Filtration Separates Water and Insoluble Materials {.info}
2: Know That Evaporation Separates Soluble Material from Water {.info}
# Filtration {.objective .objective1}
Students will learn about the process of filtration. They will learn that insoluble material will not dissolve as molecules are too big. Students will observe filtration and learn that a filter separates insoluble materials forming a filtrate. Students will be asked to explore the scene and identify filtration. They will be asked to describe the evidence used to identify the process of filtration.
# Evaporation {.objective .objective2}
Students will learn about that solution are made of a mixture between a solute dissolved in a solvent. They will learn that filtration cannot separate the mixture and that evaporation of the solvent is needed to separate a soluble material from its solvent. Students will be asked to explore the scene and identify evaporation. They will be aske to describe what happens to water as it evaporates.
# Crystallisation {.objective .objective3}
Students will learn that as water evaporates solutes come out of solution to form a solid residue. They will learn that as the solution becomes more concentrated, a solute will start to form crystals in a process known as crystallisation, eventually leaving a solid residue.
Students will be asked to explore the scene and observe evaporation. They will be asked to describe the evidence that crystallisation has taken place.
