**Scene Overview & Key Elements:**
The scene lets students explore the site of one of the major events during the Civil Rights Movement and learn about the activists, their campaigns, and the effects of this nonviolent movement. By looking for clues, students will build an understanding of the inequalities Black people faced in the United States and their fight for change.
The information is divided into three sections:
# Freedom and Discrimination {.objective .objective1}
- Students will learn about the Reconstruction era laws and constitutional amendments that aimed to improve the lives of African Americans. They will consider the effects of these changes and the racism and discrimination that Black people continued to experience. They will examine the steps that Black people took to get the civil rights given to them.
- Students will explore a scene and reflect on the discrimination Black people faced.
# The Civil Rights Movement {.objective .objective2}
- Students will learn about the Civil Rights Movement and its aims, achievements, and effects on inequality in society. They will learn about some of the laws that resulted from the movement’s efforts.
- Students will learn about different people and groups who campaigned during the Civil Rights movement.
# The Activists {.objective .objective3}
- Students will learn about important figures in the Civil Rights Movement, as well as their work and achievements. They will gain a better understanding of the impact of their work.
- Students will be asked to explore a scene and to think about the activists’ goals. Students should be asked to discuss the act that led to some progress during this period of the Civil Rights Movement.
