Specialised Cells – Red Blood Cell

The scene lets students explore and learn about red blood cells as specialised cells. The model of the cell will allow students to understand the function of the cell and how it is adapted to transport oxygen around the body.

# The Function of a Red Blood Cell{.objective .objective1}

In this section, a description of the function of blood will be provided. As a tissue, blood is made up of different cells, and components that rely on it for transport. As red blood cells make up a lot of the blood, its main role is to transport oxygen to respiring cells, along with glucose. It’s association with haemoglobin will also be described as the molecule responsible for binding with oxygen.

# The Structure of a Red Blood Cell{.objective .objective2}

In this section, a description of the structure of the red blood cell will be provided. As a specialised cell, it is adapted to its function by having no nucleus, having a biconcave shape and being filled with haemoglobin.
