Suffixes -er and -est: Dragonville Shopping Trip

Join our dragons, Quinn, Alina and Cornelius on a magical shopping trip and help them collect the items on their list using the suffixes of –er and –est to make comparisons and pick up the correct items.

# What is a Suffix?{.objective .objective1}

A suffix is a group of letters placed on the end of a word which change the words meaning.

Students should think about other suffixes they may have already learned, for example, the suffix of ly-.

In the scene, they will find themselves in a street lined with shops. Three dragon characters will be positioned, each holding a shopping list with eight items on it. Print the downloadable checklist so that your students can either work in groups, pairs or individually and mark down the items they see on the lists.



# The Suffix of –er and –est{.objective .objective2}

Adding the suffixes of –er or –est to an adjective (describing word) shows change or makes a comparison to something.

Students should read the dragons’ lists and look for the items in the explorable stores. There will be three options for each item. Students must differentiate according to the suffix, which option should be selected.


**Quinn’s Shopping List**

- A big balloon

- A smaller jar of pixie dust

- A tall giraffe

- A long snake

- A shorter story

- A soft bear

- A fast race car

- The happiest monster


**Alina’s Shopping List:**

- A bigger balloon

- A small jar of pixie dust

- A taller giraffe

- A longer snake

- The shortest story

- A softer bear

- A faster race car

- A happy monster


**Cornelius’s Shopping List:**

- The biggest balloon

- The smallest jar of pixie dust

- The tallest giraffe

- The longest snake

- A short story

- The softest bear

- The fastest race car

- A happier monster
