Prefixes (dis and mis)

After causing chaos in the Plurals Grocery Store, the Avantimos Aliens were relegated to the warehouse. However, these mischievous aliens always find a way to have fun and have taken over the warehouse with their enthusiasm and messy alien ways!

Your students have been called in to bring order back to the warehouse. Their expertise in prefixes will be especially valuable to the warehouse owners.

# Objectives:

- Understand what a prefix is.{.info}
- Identify the meaning of the prefix ‘mis-’.{.info}
- Identify the meaning of the prefix ‘dis-’.{.info}

# What is a prefix?{.objective .objective1}

A prefix is a group of letters which are added to the beginning of a word and change the words meaning. In this section, the prefix ‘un-’ is used as an example.

Students should think about other prefixes they are familiar with.

# The Prefix Mis-{.objective .objective2}

The prefix ‘mis-’ means to be ‘wrong’ ‘bad’ or ‘false’. It is applied to the beginning of root words to change the meaning.

Students are asked to walk through the warehouse and look at the aliens which have been positioned around the scene. Encourage them to describe what they are doing and infer meaning from their actions.

Next to each group of aliens is a root word and four movable prefixes (x2 ‘mis-’, x2 ‘dis-’). Students should identify which alien the words are referring to and should move the correct suffix to the appropriate word.

The prefix ‘dis-’ means ‘not’ or ‘none’. Like the prefix ‘mis-’, it is applied to the beginning of root words to change the meaning.

Next to each group of aliens is a root word and four movable prefixes (x2 ‘mis’, x2 ‘dis’). Students should identify which alien the words are referring to and should move the correct suffix to the appropriate word.
