Suffixes (–ation/-ment/-ness)

Eric the Exclamation Dragon is on another adventure and this time he is taking a friend with him, Simon, the extremely tidy Avantimos Alien. On their journey they will encounter words, which use three different noun suffixes. Your students will be tasked with three interactive activities to further develop their knowledge of the suffixes of –ation, -ment and –ness.

Objectives:

- Understand what suffixes are and how they change words.{.info}
- Identify words which use the suffix –ation{.info}
- Identify words which use the suffix -ment{.info}
- Identify words which use the suffix -ness{.info}

# The –ation Suffix{.objective .objective1}

This section provides a definition of the suffix of –ation along with examples.

The following story text will be displayed within the scene and on the students’ LMS page:

*Eric the Exclamation Dragon had a fantastic imagination. This led him to this underwater location which took a lot of preparation and specialist navigation. In celebration of his voyage, he took with him a very tidy Avantimos Alien named Simon, who was full of useful information and determination! Together they travelled to the bottom of the ocean sharing feelings of trepidation*.

On the wall of the control panel, students will find a list of words using the suffix of –ation. They are tasked with moving the verb root/base words to the wall marked ‘Verb’, along with the ‘-e’ boxes if the spelling of the root word changes. They should connect these to the suffix text boxes to make the correct word.

# The –ment Suffix{.objective .objective2}

This section provides a definition of the suffix of –ment along with examples.

The following story text will be displayed within the scene and on the students’ LMS page:

*It was a very long journey, movement was slow. As they sunk deeper to the ocean floor, they found themselves in an argument over the adjustment of the submarine seats. Eric was about to take a measurement when Simon made an announcement, that they had reached their destination! With great enjoyment, our alien friend opened the submarines hatch.*

On the wall, students will see several movable text boxes containing root words. They are tasked with moving the verb root/base words to the wall along with the ‘-e’ boxes if the spelling of the root word changes. They should connect these to the suffix text boxes to make the correct word in the ‘Noun’ column.

# The –ness Suffix{.objective .objective3}

This section provides a definition of the suffix of –ness along with examples.

The following story text will be displayed within the scene and on the students’ LMS page:

*As they left the submarine and swam towards the sea creatures, Eric felt an overwhelming feeling of happiness. The messy octopus hidden in the darkness of her shell collection, was pleased to receive Simon’s kindness, whose tidiness came in handy when he offered to organise her den! Eric felt a heaviness in his heart when it was time to leave, and with great sadness, they waved goodbye making promises to visit again soon!*

On the octopus’ rock, students will see several movable text boxes containing root words. They are tasked with moving the adjective root/base words to the wall along with the ‘-y’ and ‘+i' boxes if the spelling of the root word changes. They should connect these to the suffix text boxes to make the correct word in the ‘Noun’ column.
