Askol'd, or Askold Island in Russia is in Peter the Great Gulf. The Peter the Great Gulf is on the Southern coast of Primorsky Krai, Russia, and is one of the Sea of Japan's biggest gulfs. The island is mountainous and has three peaks, which are more than 300m high, elevating the landscape. Regarding vegetation, major parts of Askol'd island are covered in broad-leaved forest and meadows and woodlands near the coast.
Over the years, Askol'd has been used for many purposes. It is said to have been populated by Chinese gold diggers and Laminaria (brown seaweed) collectors. There are also abandoned military facilities, tunnels, and command posts that were left over when it was a lookout base for Russia's military. At one point, the island was a centre of conflict between Japan and Russia over gold fields that are said to have been situated on the island.
