Description

View from the summit of Uluru, estimated more than 500 million years old. It is a giant monolith made of sandstone, in the Northern Territory towards the centre of Australia - a sacred site of deep spiritual significance to the traditional land owners, the Aṉangu people. The orange-red hue is the result of oxidising iron in the rock. The most abundant vegetation in the surrounding terrain is spinifex grassland, with low and scattered mulga and desert oak. The important habitat hosts many vulnerable vertebrate species too, including the great desert skink, fawn hopping mouse, and Australian bustard.
