Description

The Jefferson Memorial Building is a circular, open-air structure situated along the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. Construction began in 1938 to commemorate America's founding father, Thomas Jefferson, who is widely credited with being the primary author of the *Declaration of Independence*. Jefferson's draft was eventually revised by his fellow committee members and the Second Continental Congress.

Inside the memorial, Rudulph Evans' bronze statue of Jefferson holding the *Declaration of Independence* in his left-hand takes centre stage. It is inscribed with the dates of Jefferson's birth and death (1748-1826).

Inside also features four quotes from his writings: the *Declaration of Independence*, a statement on the evolution of law and constitution, *Notes of Virginia* on slavery and education, and the *Act of Religious Freedom* which expresses Jefferson's views on freedom within religion
