Canopic jars traditionally held the organs removed during the mummification process. The lungs, liver, intestines, and stomach. Historians believe that these jars would have been placed inside a special container called a canopic chest. This chest would have been placed with the mummified body inside the tomb, alongside other offerings that the dead might need in the afterlife.
