Description

An important task of the leaf is photosynthesis, the process of converting water and CO₂ to saccharides and oxygen. Water is delivered by the xylem of the vascular bundle and the saccharides are carried by the phloem. Photosynthesis takes place especially in numerous chloroplasts of the palisade parenchyma. The spongy parenchyma is located below while water and gases easily pass through it. Gases are transported by stomata in the epidermis. The cuticle is located outside the epidermis to isolate and protect the leaf.
