Description

The date palm is grown for its sweet fruit, dates. An old saying describes the palm as growing with “its feet in the water and its head in the fire." It thrives in places with high temperatures, low moisture, and enough underground water. It is a dioecious plant. In plantation mostly female plants are grown, where inflorescences of few male plants are used for manual pollination. Every part of the date palm has its use. The fiber from leaves and trunk is made into baskets, ropes or camel saddles.
