Description

Oat is a cereal belonging to the grass family (Poaceae). It was introduced to Europe as a weed amongst wheat and barley. Its inflorescence is called a panicle. The flowers are built typically for grasses. They are preceded by bracts (lemma and palea), the perianth is reduced to 2 lodicules and there are 3 stamens. Oat can be fed to livestock or it can be used in the production of food. The grains are high on fibre. They can be rolled into flakes, which are the principal ingredient of müsli or oatmeal.
