Description

Tulips are bulbous monocots and the majority of species occur in Central Asia. The cultivation probably began in Persia in the 10th century. It was introduced to Europe during the 16th century. Parts of the flower appear in multiples of 3 (3 + 3 tepals, 3 + 3 stamens and ovary with 3 locules), which is typical for monocots. Every season the tulip creates a new bulb that is formed by specialized leaves. The largest collection of different tulip cultivars can be found in Keukenhof gardens in the Netherlands.
