Description

The pea is an important crop from the legume family (Fabaceae). It displays a flower structure typical for the family: flowers are zygomorphic (with 1 plane of symmetry), have 5 fused sepals and white or pinkish corolla consiting of a banner, two wings and a keel. The pea holds onto support by tendrils of leaf origin and it can grow up to 1‒2 m (3‒6 feet) high. Its roots host symbiotic bacteria that enrich the soil by nitrogen utilizable by plants. Gregor Mendel estabilished genetics thanks to studying peas.
