English Oak (Quercus Robur)

The English oak is a robust deciduous tree. Its trunk is covered in grooved, dark grey-brown bark. The fruits, acorns, are placed in a woody cupule. Acorns are an important part of the winter diet for many animals. In fall, the green chlorophyll is degraded from the lobed leaves and the remaining melanins are responsible for the brown color. Some of the leaves stay on the tree until next spring. Oakwood is used for making wine barrels. Galls from oaks have been used to manufacture permanent ink.
