Description

The common hornbeam has the ability to quickly and vigorously create new shoots when cut down. Its bark is smooth and gray with light, joined stripes. Its has ovate leaves with serrate margins. It is a monoecious tree, having flowers arranged in catkins. The female flowers grow in axils of three-lobed bracts. When the pollinated pistils turn to fruit – nuts, they remain seated on the bracts which act as a flying device. The hornbeam is an excellent plant for hedgerows.
