Description

Apple trees are grown for their fruit (pomes). Their flowers have 5 fused sepals and 5 free petals that are white or pink in color. Stamens occur in multiples of 5 which is typical for the Rosaceae family. It is a custom to cut apples on Christmas in some parts of Europe. The section then shows a star meaning there were 5 carpels and the person is deemed lucky or a cross (4 carpels). Most of the pome comes from enlargened receptacle, remnants of sepals and stamens can be seen on the fruit underside.
