Description

Mucor mucedo is a zygomycete fungus, creating fibrous, white to beige-gray colonies. It reproduces asexually (by ellipsoid, grayish sporangiospores) and sexually. The asexual spores are formed in the heads of sporangia, which are brown-gray when mature. Before forming of sexual spores (black, rounded zygospores with protuberances), two separate mycelia (denoted as + and −) have to grow towards each other and become fused. M. mucedo commonly occurs on animal dung, but can also infect plants.
