Description

Penicillium is a genus of ascomycete fungi which reproduce only asexually. Members of the genus are used in making of blue cheeses (Camembert, Roquefort or Gorgonzola). In 1928, a window was left open in the lab of Alexander Fleming. Spores of Penicillium infected Petri dishes containing cultures of bacteria. The bacteria in the vicinity of the mold started dying. This led to the discovery of penicillin, which suspends the creation of bacterial cell walls, and other antibiotics produced by microorganisms.
