Description

Araucaria is a genus of evergreen coniferous trees in the family Araucariaceae, which is confined today to South America and Australasia, but was presented to a limited extent in the Northern Hemisphere during the Mesozoic. Widest distribution of araucarians apparently occurred during the Jurassic. Leaves described as Brachyphyllum or Aracucaria may be helically arranged or opposite and linear or broad. Seed cones of Araucaria mirabilis are typically large up to 10 cm in diameter and consist of a central axis with helically arranged seed bracts with ovules. One of the most common fossils assignable to the family is petrified or permineralized wood described usually as Araucarioxylon or Agathoxylon.
