Description

Archelon, belonging to the Protostegidae family, is the largest (marine) turtle known, with the length exceeding to 4‒5 meters and the weight 2,2 tons. Archelon inhabited a shallow North American Late Cretaceous epicontinental sea (Western Interior Seaway - WIS) 74‒66 Ma. The carapace was leathery, similar to that of the recent Carettas. The strong jaws morphologically resemble a beak. Archelon preyed mainly on molluscs.
