Description

Microraptor ranks among small feathered Dromaesaurids living in the Early Cretaceous (ca 125 My) area of present China. The largest species of the genus exceeds 1 meter in length. They were described from findings in the famous locality of Liao-ning (ca 500 km N-NW from Peking). Jaws yielded small teeth. The animal probably possessed four wings (similarly to biplanes) and the flight was supposed to be rather passive gliding. The original coloration (i.e. melanine) has been described in the fossil feather record. Their prey were insects and small vertebrates.
