**Information:** This is the simplest alkane hydrocarbon of all. Under normal conditions, it is a colourless, non-toxic and odourless combustible gas lighter than air. It explodes when mixed with air.

**Use:** It is used as a heat source in industry and in households. It is a very important chemical raw material (methanol production, acetylene, hydrogen, cyanide etc.).

**Appearance:** It is the main component of natural gas (99%) and coal gas (30%).
