**Information:** Nitrogen dioxide is a highly poisonous gas. It exists in two forms, dimeric (N₂O₄) and monomeric. The dimeric form is colourless and the monomer is a reddish-brown gas.

**Use:** It is used as an oxidizer in rocket engines.

**Appearance:** It is part of the exhaust gases of internal combustion engines and contributes to environmental pollution. It contributes to the formation of acid rain.
