Description

** Petrology:** Rock-forming mineral is quartz associated with muscovite (common mica), magnetite, zircon, rutile.

**Genesis:** Quartzite is a hard, non-foliated metamorphic rock which was originally pure quartz sand and sandstone. Individual quartz grains are recrystallized and cemented by silica. Pure quartzite is usually white to grey or in various shades of pink and red due to varying amounts of iron oxide (magnetite). The rocks are very strong but highly fragile. Slightly metamorphosed quartzites (orthoquartzite) often can contain trace of fossils (ichnofossils).
