Description

**Divergent boundaries** are specific for their movement of tectonic plates away from each other. Most of them occurs on the ocean floor, contributing to seafloor spreading.

Process is initiated beneath **lithosphere**, where the lithosphere is lifted by an increasing **convection current**, resulting in creation of **mid-ocean ridge**. Forces, driving the plates away from each other, expand the lithosphere and form a deep fissure. Pressure is eventually reduced, causing magma in **mantle** to begin melting. This results in formation of a new magma, which flow into the opening. Afterwards, material cools down and hardens itself, creating a ‘filling’ of a fissure. Whole process then repeat itself.
