Description

**Savannah is a biome** located in the tropical and subtropical regions of the Earth, which **is characterized by a warm climate with regular alternation of periods of rain and drought**. Based on the decrease in precipitation and the length of the drought, we distinguish **wet, dry, and bushy savannas**.

**With increasing distance from the equator, the dry season prolongs, which the character of the vegetation cover corresponds to**. **Grass and shrubs with isolated trees**, which are adapted to long periods of drought, predominate here. They have sufficiently long roots that reach the groundwater level; trunks or ground onions with the ability to store and retain water for a long time; strong bark able to withstand fires. Plants are protected from being grazed by savannas' fauna in several ways: by growing thorns, a thick cover, or even by chemicals that cause bad leaf taste. Animals have also adapted to these specific conditions: mammals often have long legs that allow them to travel long distances; both carnivores and herbivores have camouflage on their bodies to blend in with their surroundings.

**Savannas occur predominantly in Africa, South America** (wetter, referred to as **llanos** and drier **campos**) **and northern Australia**.The most famous are the African savannas, thanks their rich wildlife.
