# The Moon From Surface to Core

Take your students into space to learn how our closest companion – the Moon – could help science to understand the past… and future!

## Key Learning Outcomes:

1. Describe the structure and surface features of the Moon
2. Explain why the Moon always presents the same side to Earth and how a lunar eclipse can change its appearance
3. Examine reasons why analysing lunar soil samples is important to scientists

## How to Use This Playlist:

This playlist is designed to help your students understand the Moon’s geological features and its significance to planetary scientists and astronomers.

Here are some suggestions on how to use the resources:

***Anatomy of the Moon Explorable Scene*** – Students can identify the significant surface features of the Moon and distinguish between the hemispheres (near and far side). Students can pull apart the model to observe the core, mantle, and crust.

***360 Images*** – These images surround aspects of the Moon’s appearance, enabling students to apply their knowledge to explain phenomena. Suggested questions include asking why craters are always round and how wavelengths of light are scattered or refracted to produce a ‘blood moon’.

- [The Blood Moon Over Poland](https://scene.link/PZH-f7s/cvr360-the-blood-moon-over-poland-podkarpackie)
- [Lunar Eclipse as Seen from the Moon](https://scene.link/PZH-f7s/cvr360-lunar-eclipse-as-seen-from-the-moon)

***360 Images*** - Take a trip to NASA’s Space Center to see the largest sample of moon rocks on public display. The mural shows students that the moon is not lacking components that support life – a cubic metre of lunar soil contains the same elements that make a cheeseburger, fries, and a soda! Scientists see potential for lunar soil to grow plants and even as a fuel of the future.
